34,000 people vie to become traffic police, 7 people die as a result of fitness tests
The South African province of Kwazulu-Natal recently invited applications for trainee traffic police positions and 34,000 people responded, competing for 90 positions.
Six people died because they were unable to endure the fitness test, and one other person committed suicide after not being able to pass the test.
Because the test was conducted in high temperature weather, several hundred applicants were admitted to hospital after suffering heatstroke or dehydration.
More than 15,000 people applied as soon as the advertisement for recruitment was released, with most of them being young people between the ages of 18 and 20.
On Christmas Day, 34,000 people received a text message from the traffic police department informing them that there would be physical fitness tests on the 27th and the 28th. One of the components of the fitness tests was to run four kilometers within 30 minutes. This was a prerequisite for being admitted to the position.
The fitness tests were held on the 27th in Pietermeritzburg’s Harry Gwala stadium. There was scorching heat during the afternoon when the running component of the physical test was held, with temperatures rising to 33 degrees Celsius.
Most of the job applicants did not have a drop of water the whole day, and there was little water available in the stadium. Furthermore, there was no food available nearby.
The high temperature and inadequate stamina led to six people dying as a result of heatstroke and dehydration. Approximately 230 people were hospitalized, and one person committed suicide after discovering that they did not complete the test within the stipulated time.
Mobile phone user [Xi’an, Shaanxi]: The fittest survive and those with ability succeed. Those without ability who are also afraid of bearing hardship deserve to die! Not everyone deserves to live in the cities. If I may offer a bit of advice to my peasant brothers who are not educated: cast aside considerations of face and ambition, seek truth from facts and return to your hometowns to till the land. Otherwise, there will be many of you who die while sleeping under bridges, increasing society’s burden and negatively influencing society. (Published 2013/01/02 11:02) 9 likes

Mobile phone user [Xi’an, Shaanxi]: South Africans are not clever, why don’t you compete based on parental wealth/power/connections. If you don’t have a daddy, then you should find one, Li Gang, Wang Gang, it’s all OK! [South Africans] really are inferior to Chinese people! (Published 2013/01/02 08:22) 5 likes
[Translator: In October 2010, a drunk driver, 22-year-old Li Qiming hit two university students. When arrested by security guards, he was convinced his father’s position as deputy director of the local public security bureau would give him immunity, and he shouted out: “Go ahead, sue me if you dare. My dad is Li Gang!”]
