On January 1, 2013 local time, a grave accident stemming from a stampede occurred at a New Year’s fireworks show in the Ivorian city of Abidjan. The stampede led to the loss of at least 60 lives and the injury of many more. The photographs below show the aftermath of the accident.
According to foreign media reports published by the China News Service on January 2, the death toll from the New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration in Abidjan, Ivory Coast has risen to 61 people and more than 200 people have been injured. The Ivorian government has declared that there will be three days of mourning.
An official in the Côte d’Ivoire government said most of the casualties were children. There are conflicting reports about the stampede, which occurred at a stadium in Abidjan.
There are eyewitnesses who say that the robbing of someone’s cellphone by a knife-yielding youth led to the panic, while other people say the stampede resulted from poor crowd control by the police.
The Ivorian president visited the injured in hospital, and said he would launch an investigation into this national tragedy.
