China News Service, December 31 report: According to American media reports on the 30th, a 26-year-old Nigerian youth who lives in Michigan, Victor Chukwueke, got a New Year’s gift from US President Barack Obama as the new year approached — a green card.

On the 28th, Obama signed a rare private bill granting Chukwueke permanent residency (also known as a green card), allowing this high-aiming immigrant to continue pursuing the American dream.

Chukwueke went to the US 11 years ago to undergo treatment for multiple wounds on his face. However, he illegally remained in America after his visa expired. At that time, he was only 15 years old. He strove to pursue his studies in America, later graduating from Wayne State University in Illinois and preparing to attend a certain medical school in Ohio. He could not do so, however, because he did not have the necessary green card.

The US Congress this month made the unusual move of giving him permanent residency through a private bill.  Obama signed the bill on the 28th, the same day it became effective. This kind of bill is aimed at only one person and is usually associated with immigrants. Bills of this nature rarely pass, however, and Chukwueke is the only immigrant to have gained permanent residency through such a bill in the past two years.

By the time the Celestial Empire issues green cards, I will be dead already.

(“Celestial Empire” was originally an honorific for Chinese imperial governments in the past. Chinese netizens now use the term to mock the current Chinese government.)

In America, those with expired visas and those illegally living in the country can go to college and are not repatriated. This is humanitarianism.

Before immigrants can become naturalized American citizens, they are tested on civics. The immigration office asks: The US is a country that is governed by the rule of law. What is “rule of law?” The standard answer provided by the immigration office: The government should abide by the law.

Equally, those who wish to receive a green card should please wait in line.
